Glühwein Recipe for 2 people

Last year around this time, I and Kolen was wandering around various Christmas markets in Germany, from Munich to Nuremberg. One of the things I love in the Germany Christmas Markets is their Glühwein, German Mulled Wine. I am not too fond of alcoholic beverages in general. I like soda or apple cider more than wine and beer. So during my 2-week visit to Germany, I often ordered Kinderpunsch in the Christmas markets. Until I tried the Glühwein in Rothenburg ob der Tauber Christmas Market, I am in love with the Glühwein. The warm Glühwein tasted particularly good in the cold winter weather.

Now that we are stranded at home for a year due to Covid and It’s Christmas time, I particularly missed the Glühwein. After searching for Glühwein receipes and several failed experiment with different red wine, I finally come up with this modified receipe suitable for 2 people and with the right choice of red wine, especially for Kolen who is not fond of the bitterness in alcoholic beverages.

Directions

  1. Stick the cloves into the orange slices.
  2. Heat the wine on the lowest setting possible of the stove. Do not let it boil
  3. Add sugar, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, allspice and star anise to the wine and stir for 3 minutes
  4. Add orange juice and stir. Let it simmer over the lowest heat for 27 minutes. Serve on heat-resistant drink ware.

Remark

  1. After trying red wine from light to bold spectrum, we found the Kirkland Cotes du Rhone Villages from Costco is the most suitable for our taste. The resulting Gluhwein tastes rich without too much bitterness. Pinot Noir makes it too bland and Cabernet Sauvignon makes it too bitter for our taste. I try to refrain from adding tons of sugar to my drinks.
